LOUISVILLE, Ky — Churchill Downs released the official logo for the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby on Thursday, which pays tribute to the legendary Secretariat.

This year's Kentucky Derby marks the 50th anniversary of Secretariat's Triple Crown sweep. While the logo is highlighted in the Derby's colors of red, black, gold and white, it also showcases 13 diamonds, an ode to the 13 thoroughbreds that have won all three races in the Triple Crown. The design of the diamonds is meant to represent Secretariat’s famed blue and white silks.

The diamonds are placed in a Coat of Arms shield, which "projects the achievements, heritage, longevity and stability of the Kentucky Derby," according to a press release from Churchill Downs. New York-based marketing agency SME designed the logo, which will also be used on merchandise like apparel, the silver Mint Julep cups and more. 

The 149th running of the Kentucky Oaks will be May 5, 2023 and Ketucky Derby 149 begins May 6, 2023. Tickets are on sale now.
