LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Thunder Over Louisville returns Saturday, April 22, for a full day of festivities, air shows and one of the largest fireworks displays in the U.S. As many locals know, along with Thunder comes headache-inducing traffic and road closures.

Closures will start on Thursday, April 20, with the 2nd Street Bridge closing down from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. From Friday through the Sunday after Thunder, stretches of River Road, Witherspoon, Bingham Way and Floyd Street will be closed.

The Kennedy Bridge, which carries traffic along I-65, will close around 7 p.m. Saturday, to clear the way for the evening's fireworks show. 

There are several Saturday ramp, street and interstate closures, as well as no parking zones, to keep in mind as well. You can find the full closure schedule below.

 

 

TARC, the Louisville metro's public transit authority, announced it would ofer fare-free service for Thunder Over Louisville. Five post-Thunder boarding stops will operate around downtown Louisville, most within blocks of the waterfront, TARC said in a news release.

An additional 68 buses will be added to the rotation on Saturday, April 22 to improve bus frequency. You can view TARC's post-Thunder plan below: 

 

Thunder’s fireworks show is choreographed to an original soundtrack each year. On Thunder Day, the FoodFest and Thunder On the Ground open at 11 a.m., the air show starts at 3 p.m., and fireworks blast off at 9:30 p.m.
