LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Kentucky Derby Festival released the finisher medals for this year's full marathon, marathon relay and miniMarathon, giving runners even more motivation for their spring races.
This year is extra special for Kentucky's largest road race, as it's the 50th year for the miniMarathon. It's the 22nd marathon, and all the races have been capped at 10,000 runners. So far, they are more than 50% full.
Each medal has a unique design. For the miniMarathon, it'll have the number 50 large in front and center, decked out in metallic silver and gold. The marathon and relay medals focus on the 26.2 miles for the design, and each of the medals features an outline of the logo in black nickel.
“Seeing participants cross the finish line is one of the highlights of every Derby Festival.” said Matt Gibson, Kentucky Derby Festival president and CEO. “Whether it’s the miniMarathon, Marathon or Relay, achieving that goal deserves recognition. We want our finisher medals to stand out and showcase that accomplishment.”
According to the Kentucky Derby Festival, the race began with the miniMarathon and only 301 runners in 1974. Now, with the added marathon, the event attracts around 10,000 to 12,000 runners every year.
