LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) students plan to donate $30,000 they have raised to local community groups.

What You Need To Know

  • Race for Justice event raised $30,000

  • Event organized by Louisville high school student group

  • Funds will be donated to local nonprofits

  • Race for Justice may expand in the future

These funds directly result from the Race for Justice charity event organized by Waggener High School student group Future Ancestors. Envisioned as a method to highlight and help address racial inequality and justice, Race for Justice was held on June 18 this year.

Future Ancestors is now set to provide monetary support to six different Louisville-based nonprofit groups. The nonprofits are the La Casita Center, Americana, the Louisville Bail Project, Mattingly Edge, Queer Kentucky and Roots 101. All six associations partnered with the group to launch the event, its first iteration.

The student group, however, hopes to continue hosting Race for Justice. Executive Director of Future Ancestors Nubia Ali said, “I hope for next year to work with new organizations and that more people will meet us at the intersection of justice.”

In fact, the group dreams of eventually expanding the event to a full marathon (26.2 miles). “I hope to take this race throughout the city, so we can see our beautiful city of Louisville, Kentucky” said Future Ancestors founding member Aalayla Malone.

Indeed, it would be a much more ambitious activity than this year’s event. The Race for Justice was held at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center.
