LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Churchill Downs has canceled its Wednesday slate of races due to excessive heat in the Louisville area.

What You Need To Know

  • Wednesday racing at Churchill Downs is canceled

  • The track is citing excessive heat in the forecast

  • Churchill Downs has only canceled races one time in the past for excessive heat

  • Louisville's excessive heat warning is projected to remain in effect until Wednesday evening

The track and home of the Kentucky Derby made the call Tuesday afternoon, citing that the National Weather Service's excessive heat warning will remain in effect until 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Cancellations of races beneath the Twin Spires due to weather are few and far between. Wednesday's scratch is just the 22nd in the track's history, officials said in a press release. The only other heat-related cancellation was back on June 28, 2012.

Racing is set to resume Thursday at 5 p.m., but track officials will continue to monitor the forecast. Temperature, humidity and wind speeds are all considered when making the call on cancellations, officials said.

Guests may exchange pre-purchased tickets for another comparable race day this year, Churchill Downs officials said. Ticket exchanges can be made at any Churchill Downs box office location throughout the live racing season. Guests who ordered tickets through Ticketmaster online may visit help.ticketmaster.com for existing order support.
