FRANKFORT, Ky. — By the end of this month, all driver licensing and state ID services will by handled by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

What You Need To Know

  • More counties are transferring drivers license duties to the transportation cabinet

  • All counties in Kentucky will have completed transfers by the end of June

  • All but eight counties have transferred services from circuit clerks to the KYTC

  • If you need any sort of license, you are encouraged to make an appointment online

Circuit court clerks have provided the services for every county, but they asked KYTC to take over issuing REAL IDs. Legislation passed in 2020 transitioned all licensing and ID services to the KYTC.

In a statement, Gov. Andy Beshear said, “Our administration accepted the challenge of assuming all driver licensing and ID issuance, and we have been hard at work creating the best network we can. Circuit court clerks will now be able to focus solely on court business, and driver licensing will be executed at new regional offices whose only business is licensing.”

Campbell, Jessamine, Marion, Mason and Whitley counties are switching over now and will have all services switched by the end of the day on Friday, June 10. Beginning Monday, June 13, clerks will send all customers to KYTC Driver Licensing Regional Offices. Right now, all but eight Kentucky counties have made the switch.

Anyone needing a REAL ID or any time of driver’s license, including commercial driver licenses, are encouraged to make an appointment online. They take walk-in customers on a first-come-first-serve basis, but you should check to see whether walk-in capacity has been met for the day.

KYTC regional offices—the only place where Kentuckians can get a REAL ID—are currently operating in Bowling Green, Burlington, Catlettsburg, Columbia, Covington, Danville (appointment only), Elizabethtown, Frankfort, Henderson, Hopkinsville, Independence, Jackson, Lexington, Louisville/Bowman Field (appointment only), Louisville/Dixie Highway (appointment only), Louisville/Hurstbourne, Louisville/Nia Center, Madisonville, Manchester, Mayfield, Maysville, Morehead, Owensboro, Paducah, Prestonsburg, Richmond and Somerset, with more offices planned.

This is a full list of counties that have transferred services to regional offices.
