LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Healing Place has expanded its homelessness outreach, doubling the number of long-term beds it offers.

What You Need To Know

  • The Healing Place in Louisville is a detox and recovery program helping both men and women

  • The Healing Place also offers an emergency shelter

  • Last September, it launched a new homelessness outreach program

  • In April, it increased its number of long-term shelter beds

The Healing Place is one of the most successful detox and drug and alcohol recovery programs in Louisville, but it also offers emergency shelter for the homeless.

Beginning in April, it doubled the number of long-term shelter beds from 12 to 24.

“It’s way better than being out in those tents, guys I promise you that,” Kerry Carlton told Spectrum News 1.

Carlton previously completed the six to nine month recovery program and two months ago moved back in, taking advantage of the newly offered long-term housing.

“I’ve been clean and sober for over a year now and it’s the best move I’ve ever made in my life,” Carlton explained.

Last September, The Healing Place began a pilot program expanding its homelessness outreach by offering long-term beds.

“I know these guys are doing 110% of their best ability to make sure that I don’t ever have to hit these streets again,” Carlton adds.

“The homeless outreach program is an extension of our overnight shelter so we have our own hallway within the overnight area,” Weisshaupt explained.

“We filled up very quickly, and the need was much greater than we could accommodate, so we’re extremely grateful to have the additional beds and we’ve already started filling them,” she adds.

As always, The Healing Place is providing residents with resources aimed at getting people back on their feet. Carlton knows a place of his own is in his future.

“Definitely in my own place. I’m working on getting a job. That’s another thing these guys help you out with. They’re always working to make sure you get your life back stable,” Carlton said.

And the reality is, there are others like Carlton wanting that stability.

The Healing Place is where many are getting their footing.
