LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Jefferson County Grand Jury has indicted Keyshaun Stewart for the death of Frederick O'Bannon and for shooing Louisville Metro Police Officer Sgt. James Lane on Nov. 19, 2021.

  • He is accused of killing a construction worker and shooting an LMPD sergeant on the Watterson Expressway

  • Frederick O'Bannon died and Sgt. James Lane

  • Stewart will be arraigned on Dec. 6

Stewart is charged with:

  • one count of Murder 
  • one count of Assault First Degree 
  • one count of Criminal Attempt Murder-Police Officer
  • one count of Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon
  • one count of Wanton Endangerment First Degree
  • one count of Fleeing or Evading Police First Degree (Pedestrian)
  • one count of Persistent Felony Offender in the Second Degree.

The shooting occurred shortly 2:45 a.m. on the Watterson Expressway near Dixie Highway on Nov. 19. Sgt. Lane was working traffic control at the construction site when Stewart allegedly walked up and killed O'Bannon then walked over to the police car and shot Lane. 

Despite being shot, Lane was able to chase down Stewart.

O’Bannon was from Louisville and worked for Louisville Paving and Construction. He was pronounced dead on the scene.  LMPD Chief Erika Shields said in an earlier Facebook post that the motive for the shootings was not determined. 

Stewart will be formally arraigned on Monday, Dec. 6. Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Elizabeth Jones Brown is the prosecutor. A public defender was assigned to Stewart.
