ULAA announced that each coach had reached an agreement with Director of Athletics Vince Tyra. Women's basketball's Jeff Walz, softball's Holly Aprile and field hockey's Justine Sowry will all be sticking around for quite some time.
Aprile's contract is extended through 2026, while both Walz and Sowry have been extended through 2028.
Jeff Walz is the women's basketball program's all-time winningest coach, boasting a record of 385-108 while averaging 27.5 victories each season.
“I am blessed to have an amazing staff and coach wonderful young women who represent their families, our program, the University and the city of Louisville with class and pride," Walz said. "It has been 15 years of hard work, doing things the right way and lots of on and off the court wins that have made this extension possible."
Tyra heralded Walz as an elite coach at the helm of "one of the best programs in the country."
"Continuity in his coaching staff has been a key to his program’s success and this extension will help solidify that continuity," Tyra said.
On the softball side of things, Aprile soon enters her fourth season as head coach. She's led the Cardinals through 66 wins and reached the 2019 NCAA regional finals.
“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue to lead the softball program at the University of Louisville,” Aprile said. “Our goals are to compete for both an ACC and NCAA Championship. With the amazing support of Vince Tyra, Amy Calabrese, Rachael Cosgrove, as well as Dr. Neeli Bendapudi and the ULAA Board, we will continue our work to achieve those goals. Louisville is rich in winning traditions.
The Cardinals' field hockey program will also be glad to see Coach Sowry sticking around, as she's spearheaded the program for over a decade – amassing 150 wins, six NCAA tournament appearances and the program's first ever national seed along the way.
“I love the city of Louisville, the University, and our field hockey program,” Sowry said. “I started my collegiate career here as an assistant and I want to finish here. I am so proud of what we've accomplished, and I will continue to strive toward the goal of achieving an NCAA championship.
