LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville's Free Public Library will reopen all branches for "grab and go" access on March 26, Mayor Greg Fischer announced in a press release Thursday.

What You Need To Know

  • Public libraries in Louisville are reopening at the end of March

  • All branches of the Louisville Free Public Library will be open for "grab and go" service beginning March 26

  • Self-check kiosks, social distancing, and mask wearing will be commonplace

  • Branches will continue curbside pickup of library materials

Patrons will be able to browse and pick up library materials in-person, checking out through self-check kiosks. Capacity will be limited to allow social distancing and visits will be limited to 90 minutes or less.

“This is great news, especially for our kids, as many of them are about to head back for in-person classes. I am proud of the way we have come together to reduce the number of COVID-19 cases here, and this is just one example of the good things resulting from that commitment,” Fischer said. “I appreciate all the work that Library Director Lee Burchfield and his team have done to provide services during the pandemic, and I know they – and our library patrons – are eager to get back into their branches.”

Each library branch will reconfigure furniture, computer stations, and equipment to ensure safe physical distancing can be maintained. Mask wearing and temperature checks will be enforced, though librarygoers under 5 years of age won't be required to mask up.

“We’re very excited to be able to expand services and welcome more people back into the Library in a way that helps keep both patrons and staff safe and healthy,” Library Director Lee Burchfield said.

While study rooms and meeting spaces won't be available yet, computer access, printing, and faxing services will be available.

Curbside pick-up of library materials, which began on June 1, also will continue at all locations, six days a week. Information on the Library’s curbside service can be found here.

“We are working toward getting community centers open by the end of the month as well, and will release those details when they are ready,” Fischer said.
