FRANKFORT, Ky. — Members of Kentucky's House of Representatives have filed a formal impeachment petition against Rep. Robert Goforth (R-East Bernstadt) based on his alleged assault and strangulation of his wife last April.

10 complainants signed the petition to impeach Goforth, alleging he committed criminal activity, abuse of office, and financial misconduct.

Goforth was arrested in April and accused of strangling his wife "to such an extent that she sought protection from law enforcement" as the petition reads. Goforth has since plead not guilty, and the case on criminal charges is still pending in Laurel County.

"The Commonwealth requires its elected officials to be persons of good moral character and conduct," the petition read. "It is wrong for this representative to sit in the Chamber and be paid for his services with our hard-earned tax dollars."

The petition for Goforth's impeachment comes just a few days after the Kentucky House formed a Beshear impeachment committee, after petitions calling for the Democratic governor's impeachment gained traction.
