LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Sophia Gibson is having another perfect summer day.
“You weren’t kidding whenever they were powerful,” said Gibson as she plays in front of a small machine blowing thousands of bubbles a minute.
She and her cousin Lincoln are spending the day at one of Louisville’s Free and Public Libraries (LFPL).
“You can make tie-dye shorts, or tie-dye anything,” said Gibson. She wraps rubber bands around a white t-shirt.
The eight-year-old tie-dye queen is hard at work making a new piece to add to her collection.
While Sophia and Lincoln are focused on their prep work, something is bubbling outside the library doors.
Mark Cocke is the owner of Thebubblebug. His car can blow 3,000 bubbles a minute. He’s been in the bubble blowing business for ten years. The idea for TheBubbleBug came to him in a dream. He’s ready for the outdoor fun to begin.
Sophia comes to library events close to five times a week. Louisville libraries are offering events to children and families at no cost all summer long.
The events are all for fun in the sun, but kids also can keep their academic skills sharp.
Kids in grades three through five can lose up to 20% of their reading skills made during the school year during summer break.
This can be prevented by reading at least six books over breaks.
Sophia checks out two books a week while attending events like Tie-dye and Bubbles.
She knows she’ll be ready for the third grade this fall.
The latest free events at the LFPL can be found online.
