LEXINGTON, Ky. — Talent and camaraderie meet hand in hand with Fayette County’s longtime chorus group, the Lexington Singers.
When Andrew Moore arrived in Lexington in 1990, he said he discovered his in-law’s neighbor had a special connection to his passion for performing. That neighbor was the founder of Lexington Singers, one of the oldest independent adult ensembles in the country.
It grabbed Moore's attention, starting a decades-long run with the choir.
Now, more than 30 years later, Moore is the president of the adult choir, a position he’s held for the last two years.
The group brings hundreds of Lexington's vocalists together, blending classic and pop sounds on stages across the city and beyond.
In addition to adults, the Lexington Singers have four other choirs, including a children's ensemble. The group, directed by Jefferson Johnson, holds auditions in the fall and the spring for its adult group.
“Both semesters, we've had [a] record numbers of people audition and record numbers of people that we've taken in as new members," Moore said. "This semester, there are over 20 new singers."
Last year, dozens of new singers joined.
“We have some people who are professional musicians, but also some people who are not and just want to contribute to the Lexington community,” said vocalist Faith Neece.
Moore said the group successfully navigated the pandemic's challenges by practicing through Zoom and preserving the sound of a large ensemble.
“We submitted our parts through recordings, sent them in and they were compiled into a core piece," Moore said.
More information about the group, including its ensembles and upcoming performances, can be found on its website.
