Adara Norman, 17, has been singing her whole life and today she performed tributes to “The Cure” and “The Smiths.”

“I feel like it’s a really good way for you to like, express yourself and just have fun, because at the end of the day, it’s really a carefree thing, like, of course you’re performing to people, but there’s really no pressure because at the end of the day, it’s just a way for you to have fun playing music,” said Norman, a student at The School of Rock Louisville.

Over a hundred students as young as 7-years-old performed this weekend at Portal 1512 and they rehearsed for months.

“We go for one rehearsal every Tuesday. It’s two hours long and everybody comes to the rehearsal. We have two directors and we’ve been doing that about three or four months,” she said.

Norman has been a student at the School of Rock for the last three years, but in a few months, she will be shifting from art to science at the University of Kentucky.

“I’’m a biology major, but I really do want to pursue music as a hobby outside of college and hopefully do art as a hobby,” she said.

The School of Rock Louisville is part of an international network of over 300 schools and Louisville was recently named among the top ten.

“They work really, really hard, but it’s work that they love, it’s work with people that they really enjoy being around, their fellow musicians. Our show seasons are about three and a half months, and they’ll pick a really cool theme, like today we have funk versus punk as one of the themes; so, you get to choose some music you really like,” said Doug Scofield, co-owner of School of Rock Louisville.

The school is building a community around music and having fun.

“At the end of the day, of course, you want to sound good, but it’s about having fun,” said Norman.

Nearly 20 hours of music all in one weekend. Next weekend, the students are rocking out at Gravely Brewing Company.
