LEXINGTON, Ky. — The kitchen in the Hope Center’s Ball-Quantrell Jones Recovery Center for Women broke out into a fire Friday evening.

What You Need To Know

  • The Hope Center’s Ball-Quantrell Jones Recovery Center for Women had a fire break out Friday evening in the kitchen

  • The sprinklers contained the fire until the fire department showed up, but the floors did flood, even in the dining area

  • The center has a makeshift space but needs help financially and through food donations

  • Officials said the ball gets rolling in the kitchen Monday

No injuries were reported, but the kitchen itself is heavily damaged. You could see the remains of a light melted by the fire dangling from the ceiling. Debris and water were collecting on the floor.

“Our kitchen is completely unusable from that fire and we lost a lot of food due to some smoke damage as well as to the freezers and fridges that sit inside that space,” said Destiny Oakley, the center’s assistant director of development.

Oakley said the sprinklers did a great job containing the fire until the Lexington Fire Department arrived, but it flooded through the kitchen and into the dining area.

“A lot of furniture moved, some mop buckets, some fans going to help dry that out,” she said.

The center aims to keep those who battle substance abuse disorder and other mental health issues off the street and provide essentials like food. This center serves three meals to about 100 women a day and they need help to ensure these women eat.

“We really do need some community support whether that be through food donations of shelf-stable food, things that can be microwaved, bottled or canned drinks or even financial contributions,” Oakley said.

They’ve got a makeshift dining space in the building set up for the time being, and Oakley said she knows these women continue to carry on, despite the fire.

“Even through this tough time they’re really resilient women who are going to get through it together,” she said.

Oakley said they are grateful to all donations received. More information on how to donate can be found on their website.

Crews will be out on Monday to help get the ball rolling on repairing and reopening up this kitchen for women in the area.
