COVINGTON, Ky. — The state tour continues for Senate Majority Leader Senator Mitch McConnell.

McConnell visited Covington Thursday where he gave a preview of what the next rescue package may include.

“It’s clear that the Coronavirus is not over,” McConnell said.

During a visit at Gravity Diagnostics, a national medical COVID-19 testing facility, McConnell spoke about the first Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act from March.

“The comprehensive nature of what we were trying to do here which was not only tackle the health care side but the economic side, in a massive way to literally prop things up until we could somehow achieve normalcy,” McConnell said.

McConnell then previewed what the next rescue package might look like with liability protection being among the items.

“Liability protection for everyone. This is not just for business. This is for hospitals, doctors, nurses, businesses, universities, colleges, K-12 education, local government, everybody who had to deal with the coronavirus,” McConnell said.

The Kentucky senator said they’re considering and open to offering another stimulus check especially to those impacted in the hospitality business.

“People who made $40,000 and less got hit particularly hard because many of those folks work for restaurants, hotels and hospitality fields. We’re certainly open to additional cash assistance to them as we provided before,” McConnell said.

McConnell said the next package will focus on kids and school, jobs, and health care. Later in July, more details will be released.

Meanwhile, McConnell said he is undecided whether he will attend the Republican Party Convention.

His concerns revolve around the Coronavirus pandemic. He says the convention is a challenging situation this year.

“A number of my colleagues have announced that they’re not going to attend and we’ll have to wait and see how things look in late August to determine whether or we can safely convene that many people,” McConnell said.
