KENTUCKY — During the month of May, we take extra time to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Which is also known as AAPI month.
According to the Asian Pacific Heritage, the month was picked to remember the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7th in 1843.
It also marks the completion of the transcontinental railroad that same month in 1869, where a big portion of those who laid tracks were of Chinese descent.
Almost 11,000 hate incidents against Asian Americans have been reported in less than 2 years, according to the group, Stop AAPI Hate.
During this In Focus Kentucky segment, Renee Eng takes a look at how this California based organization is creating new efforts to curb anti-Asian violence, by treating it as a public health issue.
Also featured during this segment, Kayla Moody shares infomration about the University of Kentucky's Delta Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc, which is Kentucky's first and only Asian-interest, but not Asian exclusive sorority.
