Democrats are gathering in Chicago to officially put current Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on the ballot for the 2024 presidential election. 

From speeches to key moments, Spectrum News is breaking down each day of the Democractic National Convention into 60 seconds. On Day 1:

  • Protesters gathered by the numbers outside of the DNC as the events started for the day. 
  • Former presidential candidate and Civil Rights activist Jesse Jackson was given a tribute and standing ovation. 
  • Vice President and current democrat nominee Kamala Harris surprised many by coming to the stage early in the night to give a quick speech claiming, "when we fight - we win." 
  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke about her past and how Vice President Kamala Harris is "for the middle class because she came from the middle class." 
  • Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke on the main stage saying Harris has the character, experience and vision to lead the country forward.
  • Current President Joe Biden got on stage to discuss his past accomplishments talking about passing the torch to Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. He said, "As your president, I’ve been determined to keep America moving forward, not going back, to stand against violence in all its forms, to be a nation where we not only live with but thrive on diversity."
