LEXINGTON, Ky. — Democratic State Rep. Lamin Swann has passed away after being hospitalized earlier this week. His mother, Pamela Dixon, announced his passing in a statement from the House Democratic Caucus Sunday morning.

“There are no words to fully describe the grief and impossible loss that others and I feel right now after saying goodbye earlier today to my beloved son, Lamin. Beyond our faith, what comforts us is knowing the positive and lasting impact he had on so many,” Dixon said.

Gov. Andy Beshear expressed his sadness over Lamin’s passing. “Lamin was always smiling, leading with kindness while working to build a better Kentucky for all. He will be greatly missed,” he said.

In a statement, House Democratic Caucus leaders Derrick Graham, Cherlynn Stevenson and Rachel Roberts shared their sympathies. “Our caucus is devastated by the news of Lamin’s passing, and we pray for his family during this extremely difficult time,” they said.

“He served his constituents as well as anyone ever has. He was an especially strong advocate for Fayette County as well as countless other Kentuckians who benefitted from his voice on issues ranging from social justice to expanding disability rights,” they added.

Rep. Andy Barr, who represents Lexington in the U.S. House of Representatives, also shared his condolences. "I'm very sorry to learn of the passing of Representative Lamin Swann," he said. 

Swann was the representative for the 93rd District in Lexington, and was in his first term as a lawmaker. According to the bio on his campaign website, Swann was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and Tates Creek High School.

His career included social work with the Fayette County Family Court and as a consultant for progressive organizations and causes.

Final arrangements for his funeral will be announced in the coming days.
