FRANKLIN, Ky. — Family circumstances caused the Spencer family to hit a low, but Floena Spencer and her son Shawn Woods needed a spark. They found it in the kitchen with Spencer Sauce, and now the duo is making homemade BBQ sauce for all.

Spencer said she and her son didn't communicate as much during the pandemic, but making BBQ sauce together allowed them to communicate more and helped them get through tough times.

“The sauce, I believe, saved both of us," said Spencer. "It gives us something to look forward to.”

Spencer Sauce comes in over five different flavors. Woods said he is glad that they can work together and knows communication is key.

“We're a team and we're working together. We got to get these orders out," said Woods. "So we have to communicate and that really played a big part as well."

As for Spencer, she now shares that sentiment with Woods.

"We talked more in the last four months then we probably talked in a year," said Spencer. "Anyone can just run their mouth, but when you are talking about something serious, that gets your attention.”

The family said their ultimate goal is for their sauce to end up on grocery store shelves. For now, they are selling at pop-ups in the Franklin and Bowling Green area and can serve up to 95 bottles per pop-up. Orders have come fast and furious and they have an online option as well, which you can see here.

Woods said hopefully their story can serve as a role model for other families going through a hard time or just in general.

“Hopefully this brings other families motivation and know that there is something out there for them to do," said Woods. "Just come up with something bright.”
