BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Following a successful campaign last year, the Rotary Club of Bowling Green begun working on their biggest project yet on Talbott Dr.

What You Need To Know

  • The Rotary Club plants American flags in neighborhoods and then donates the money to local charities

  • They donated over $10,000 to local Bowling Green Charities that work with children

  • They've planted over 130 flags and look to get to 500 this year

  • The organization started 3 years ago

The organization started three years ago and works with neighborhoods and local charities around town.

“We come around with a big truckload of flags and put them at every household in the neighborhood and the results of that is we have been able to donate over $10,000 to local charities,” said committee chair Dan Cherry.

There are six major flag holidays and they are working to plant about 500 flags ahead of Memorial Day. Local charities such as Top Crops benefited from the project last year, and Bill Greer was very happy to receive a donation from the club.

“We had a couple of projects we wanted to get done at Top Crops so we outlined those projects and heard back in a couple days that we were one of the recipients of their financial engagement," Greer said. "So we are thrilled with the support of the rotary club."

This year, the club looks to top the $10,000 dollars that was spread out to local organizations and there are only two criteria to receive a donation.

“Our two criteria are local and to benefit children and we will consider anything," Cherry said.

Flag installations take about 10 minutes per home and Cherry is happy to keep the patriotism alive in the area.

"Bowling Green is very patriotic so about 95% of homeowners are fine with having flags," Cherry said. "We don't know how much we want to donate this year, but each year we get a lot of nominations for charities that deserve a donation."
