LOUISVILLE, Ky — People around the world are remembering the late Prince Philip.
In Kentucky, the Duke of Edinburgh and his wife, Queen Elizabeth II visited Churchill Downs in 2007 for the 133rd Kentucky Derby said Rachel Collier, Kentucky Derby Museum spokesperson.
Collier explained the Royal family has a long-standing tradition of attending the Derby.
“Through the years we've seen them here from Princess Margaret to Prince Philip, attending in 2007 with his wife Queen Elizabeth for the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby,” Collier said.
That year, reports indicate that the Queen and Prince Philip arrived two hours ahead of the race. Pictures show that they stood next to the iconic twin spires at Churchill Downs, having the finish line vantage point.
“It's the last documented time that Prince Philip was here in attendance at the Kentucky Derby along with his wife Queen Elizabeth and it was a really big deal when they were in town. The Kentucky Derby is known for having celebrities come from all over the world see this world-famous race, and the Royal family is among those and so it was a big deal when we had the Queen and her husband, Prince Philip here in attendance in 2007,” Collier said.
Prince Philip spent seven decades with his wife Queen Elizabeth II.
“This is global news that has hit, and so many people were talking about today and mourning with the royal family, and to have that tie where Prince Philip has been to Kentucky and then to the most famous race in the world the Kentucky Derby is something that we can share with guests on our tours,” Collier said.
The British Royal Family said Prince Philip passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle early Friday. He was 99.
