BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Deanna Christian started her non-profit organization, The Doll Project, after her friend Bea Kennedy was scammed out of a pricey doll online.

Christian heard about the incident from her friend and took the time to handcraft a doll for Kennedy herself. She now owns her own non-profit and is actively seeking to send dolls to other grandmothers with cancer.

What You Need To Know

  • The Doll Project is actively taking donations of money or clothes

  • Deanna Christian is looking for grandmothers in the Bowling Green area to give dolls to

  • Each doll's clothing is custom made

"We give dolls and heirloom quality doll clothes to grandmothers fighting cancer so they can have the joy of giving the doll to a beloved child," the Doll Project's website reads.

“I did another one for a friend of mine who also has cancer and while I'm sitting there sewing I realized this is something that I can do for other grandmothers to give them that joy and that blessing," Christian said.

Kennedy, who was one of the first recipients of Christian's dolls, was brought to tears after receiving it from Christian.

"Tears came to my eyes and I was just it was heartfelt joy is what it was,” Kennedy said.

With Mother's Day coming up, Christian is looking not only for donations but for other grandmothers to spread the love to.

She also hopes to partner with other seamstresses to keep the project going.

“I’d love to see it be something that other seamstresses sew dresses for," Christian said. "I think it is something that can outlive me so I hope the community gets that vision and supports it.”
