MUHLENBERG, Ky. — Muhlenberg's sheriff passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, leaving a legacy behind him.
Ricki Allen, working as the county sheriff since January of 2019, was known and loved by many in the community. Before his position as sheriff, Allen worked with the Kentucky State Police (KSP) and was a school resource officer for Muhlenberg County Schools.
After working with him for years as a colleague and a friend, Community Relations Specialist Carla Embry said his passion for and dedication to his community will leave a lasting impact for generations to come. “Passionate for our children and for our youth, for his family, for God. He’s very dedicated, you can always count on him and just very caring and loving,” said Embry.
Working as a school resource officer and a patrol officer with KSP, he served as a mentor for many. Embry said that Allen would give students opportunities to take part in leadership roles and would always lend a kind ear and heart to everyone. While serving with KSP, he was a leader and role model for many patrol officers.
Wednesday afternoon, Venita Ray paid her respects to his memorial outside of the Muhlenberg County Courthouse. Allen was a role model to her son, who is a patrol officer, and he coached her grandson's baseball team. Ray said that his light and leadership will truly be missed.
“He was well-loved by everyone, and he was a wonderful coach and a wonderful mentor to the youth, so as our youth grow up, they’ll remember him,” said Ray.
Allen served in law enforcement for 30 years. No foul play is suspected, and KSP is conducting the death investigation. A light in the community for decades, Embry said that his legacy will remain in the kindness he showed others.
“We need to, now more than ever, just be kind to other people and that’s exactly what Ricki did. He showed kindness to each one of our kids, to the staff and to the community,” said Embry.
The Muhlenberg County Courthouse will close this Friday in honor of Allen and plan to reopen Monday, Oct. 5.
