HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — The Huntington Beach City Council is calling for a vote of no confidence Monday and strip Councilman Tito Ortiz of his title as mayor pro tem.
Mayor Kim Carr, Councilman Mike Posey, and Councilman Dan Kalmick introduced the agenda item late last week.
“Mr. Ortiz has failed to perform at a level expected for this position and has demonstrated little commitment to serving in the role with honor and dignity,” the agenda item reads. “His unprofessional demeanor and poor judgment have raised concerns among residents, local business owners, and his fellow council members. The Huntington Beach community expects local elected officials to take their governing responsibilities seriously, and we wholeheartedly agree."
The former Ultimate Fighting Championship star with the moniker “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” has lived up to his nickname since being voted into the city council—with the most votes in the city’s election history in November.
Last month, the mayor booted Ortiz from an in-person meeting for not wearing a mask despite a public health order requiring everyone to do so.
Ortiz recently faced the ire of residents and his fellow council colleagues when he went on social media to criticize a small restaurant for not taking his order because he did not wear a mask in the building. Ortiz later apologized.
The agenda item is asking the council to do three things:
- Conduct a vote of no confidence in Ortiz.
- Remove his leadership role as mayor pro tem.
- Identify another council member to serve as mayor pro tem.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m.
