Today's Big Stories
1. 2 new LA City Council members sworn in
Adrin Nazarian and Ysabel Jurado were sworn in behind closed doors Monday as the two newest members of the L.A. City Council, representing the Second and 14th districts, respectively.
The City Clerk administered the oaths, with a ceremonial public swearing-in to follow during Tuesday's council meeting.
The clerk last week administered oaths to the four incumbent council members who won new terms in the 2024 elections, according to Josue Marcus, a spokesman for the office.
Mayor Karen Bass announced last week Krekorian will serve as executive director of the Office of Major Events as part of preparations for major sporting events coming to the region. In part, he will work as liaison for the upcoming 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
2. Topanga Canyon Boulevard closed in Santa Monica mountains due to fire danger
Due to the forecast of gusting Santa Ana winds and critical fire danger conditions, Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol has closed Topanga Canyon Boulevard between Mulholland Drive and Pacific Coast Highway in the Santa Monica Mountains, continuing until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Authorities say only residents and local business traffic will be allowed into the canyon
3. Person of interest arrested in UnitedHealthcare CEO killing, police say
Police in Pennsylvania have arrested a person of interest in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, officials said Monday.
Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested on firearms charges, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news briefing. It remains unclear if he is the same person seen on video footage opening fire on Thompson last week outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
"The suspect was in a McDonald's and was recognized by an employee who then called local police," Tisch said. "Responding officers questioned the suspect, who was acting suspiciously and was carrying multiple fraudulent IDs, as well as a U.S. passport."
Mangione had a firearm on him when he was arrested, as well as a suppressor, “both consistent with the weapon used in the murder,” the commissioner said. Officers also recovered clothing, including a mask, “consistent with those worn by our wanted individual,” she said.
4. Senators propose 18-year term limit for Supreme Court justices
A pair of senators introduced a resolution Monday that would restrict U.S. Supreme Court justices to 18-year terms.
Sens. Joe Manchin, I-W.Va, and Peter Welch, D-Vt., are proposing a system that would cycle in a new justice every two years. The constitutional amendment would begin after a transition period and would not affect the tenure of currently sitting justices.
“The current lifetime appointment structure is broken and fuels polarizing confirmation battles and political posturing that has eroded public confidence in the highest court in our land,” Manchin said in a statement.
In October, the Annenberg Public Policy Center found 56% of American disapprove of the Supreme Court and said they trust it either “a little” or “not at all” to act in their best interest. In September, a separate Annenberg survey found 68% of American adults support term limits.
