SAN DIEGO — Comic-Con fans, rejoice. Over the weekend, San Diego Comic Convention announced it would hold an in-person "Special Edition" Comic-Con in November over the Thanksgiving weekend.

"It is our hope that by fall conditions will permit larger public gatherings," organizers said.

The Thanksgiving special edition of Comic-Con would be the first in-person one since 2019.

"Hopefully, this event will shore up our financial reserves and mark a slow return to larger in-person gatherings in 2022," said David Glanzer, spokesperson for the nonprofit organization.

Details are still being finalized regarding badge cost and attendance capacity.

News of an in-person Comic-Con comes after the organization had announced it would hold this year's celebration as the free online Comic-Con@Home. The online experience would be reduced to a three-day event, spanning July 23-25.

Earlier this month, Glanzer told Spectrum News 1 that as vaccination efforts ramped up in the state, the organization would be in a much better position to host an in-person event.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced last week that California would open its coronavirus vaccine program to all adults starting April 15.

At the national level, President Biden ordered states and other jurisdictions to open vaccines to anyone 16 and older by May 1. The vaccination effort is the key to the president's goal of getting the U.S. "closer to normal" by the July 4 holiday. 

As for Comic-Con, at this time, individuals who have purchased badges that were rolled over to the 2021 show will have those badges automatically transferred to the 2022 event unless a refund is requested.
