1. LA welcomes sailors, Marines, military for Fleet Week
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass joined Navy and other military and local officials Wednesday to celebrate the beginning of LA Fleet Week, a multi-day celebration of the nation's maritime services at the Port of Los Angeles.
The group of officials welcomed visiting sailors, Marines, Coast Guard members and soldiers, who will be in town through Memorial Day weekend. Fleet Week will run Friday to Monday and provide an assortment of activities, including concerts, aerial flyovers, military equipment displays, demonstrations, food and family entertainment.
The venue's main expo is alongside the Battleship USS Iowa.
Three U.S. Navy ships — USS Cincinnati, an Independence-class littoral combat ship; USS Princeton, a Ticonderoga-class cruiser; and USS Ashland, a Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship — will be available for free public ship tours 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on a first-come, first-serve basis.
2. Metro ridership increases by 10%, sets a record since the COVID-19 pandemic
LA Metro delivered more than 23.4 million rides in April — a 10% increase in total system ridership compared to last year in the same month — and the highest ridership level recorded since the coronavirus pandemic began in March 2020, officials announced Wednesday.
Metro delivered more than 18.2 million rides on its buses in April, along with almost 5.2 million rides on the rail system. In a statement, Metro said ridership was especially high on weekends in April, rising 14% year over year and reaching 88% of its April 2019 level, before the pandemic began.
Metro officials said weekend ridership has become a bigger share of the overall ridership in the past three years. In April 2019, average weekend ridership was just 55% of average weekday ridership, but compared to this month, average weekend ridership was 66.4% of the average weekday ridership.
3. Teen dies during apparent social media stunt on Los Angeles bridge, police say
A 17-year-old boy fell to his death this weekend while climbing a Los Angeles bridge in an apparent social media stunt, police said.
Police were sent to the 6th Street Viaduct around 2 a.m. Saturday and found the boy, who was pronounced dead at a hospital. His name wasn't immediately released.
The teen slipped and fell “when climbing upon one of the arches, in order to post, apparently, a social media broadcast,” Police Chief Michel Moore said during a meeting of the Los Angeles Police Commission.
The bridge, which has thousands of LED lights and views of LA's skyline, is the largest and most expensive span ever built in the city. It was designed to become a city landmark.
