LOS ANGELES – Starting an art collection might seem out of reach for most, especially in a thriving market where prices can easily skyrocket.

However, a new group show called the Art Collector Starter Kit VI at the Corey Helford Gallery in downtown Los Angeles is presenting budding art collectors with a rare opportunity to start an art collection without spending 10’s or even hundreds of thousands of dollars to acquire a piece.

Part of the Corey Helford Gallery’s mission is to support the work of emerging L.A. artists who are coming from diverse backgrounds, incorporating elements of pop culture, street art, and graffiti.

Composer Raney Shockne is a regular at the show, which is in its sixth year. He came to the opening night with his family to take a look at the 100 artists on display with a mix of recognizable names like Shag as well as many rising talents.

“I saw some of these early artists that had painted some accessible works for us,” said Shockne. “I fell in love with something and it was a reasonably-priced piece. They had made it accessible to us.”

The initial Art Collector Starter Kit drew big crowds in 2014, signaling a sizable market for entry level collectors and the event is on track to being regular on the L.A. art scene.

“Later, I realized that art could be an investment on that level,” said Shockne. “I could buy a piece for 2 or $3,000 and its value would grow. I didn't realize that the art market was a commodity.”

One of the things Raney loves about this show is that many of the artists are on hand to meet with collectors and talk about their work.

“I'm really, really excited to be part of this show because I'm collectors are able to afford most of the pieces here,” said participating artist Onch, who specializes in wearable art. “That really allows collectors to be able to grow with all these artists and be able to collect their pieces from the beginning.”

Shockne said he could walk away with two or three pieces from the show, of course, after some consultation with his family.

“I'm here with my wife tonight,” Shockne said. “And she basically controls the purse strings and says, Yes, No. The question that I always ask myself is, and I learned this very early, Do I want to live with this piece intimately? It's not an impulsive decision. This is a relationship with art.”

The Art Collector Starter Kit VI runs until January 18.
