A winter storm will pack a punch for much of the Badger State through Tuesday.

Let's break down everything we know.

What You Need To Know

  • Snow showers will last into early Wednesday

  • The focus is on areas farther south and east

  • We'll deal with heavy snow and windy conditions

Most of Wisconsin will be under a winter weather alert of some sort through early Wednesday morning.

Snow is really ramping up over portions of southwestern and southern Wisconsin. Snowfall rates will likely increase late Tuesday morning. Roads will become more snow-covered and treacherous as the day rolls along.

Snow becomes widespread by Tuesday afternoon and evening. Areas along the lakefront (Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha) will likely see more of a wintry mix and rain.

Snow eventually winds down overnight on Tuesday into Wednesday, clearing from west to east.

Snow totals will range between 6 to 9 inches in a band from Madison to Green Bay. Amounts will be lower near Lake Michigan and further north.

By early Wednesday morning, most of southern and eastern Wisconsin will see several inches of snowfall.

Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha may see less than Madison and Green Bay because of rain mixing in at times.

If you can avoid leaving your home on Tuesday, I'd recommend doing so to reduce the stress of travel problems. Because of heavy snowfall and windy conditions (wind gusts up to 40 mph), expect low visibility on the roads, too.

Although the snow plows will be out and about, anticipate snowy and slippery roadways.

If you have to travel, drive, allow plenty of extra time to avoid delays. Check for any road closures before heading out.
