If you’re traveling through downtown Milwaukee and aren’t able to watch your “Weather On The 1s” forecast until later, the top of a building may help you know what to expect with the forecast.

What You Need To Know

  • The Wisconsin Gas Building’s flame helps illustrate the forecast

  • There is a poem that goes through what each color and motion symbolizes

  • The Gas Company Flame also provides navigational light for boats on Lake Michigan

So I actually didn’t know about this Milwaukee tidbit when I first moved to Wisconsin. I was at Milwaukee Brat House with some of my coworkers enjoying some tasty cheese curds (obviously), when I saw a cool poster on the wall with an interesting poem.

As seen in the picture above, the poem goes:

When the flame is red, it's warm weather ahead!

When the flame is gold, watch out for cold!

When the flame is blue, there's no changes in view!

When there's a flickering flame, expect snow or rain!

Being a weather nerd, I naturally had to do more research and see if there was any validity to this poem.

Sure enough, after searching the poem, a picture of the Wisconsin Gas Building came up with the flame lit up on top.

According to the Encyclopedia of Milwaukee, the flame was added to the top of the building back in 1956. Although there was a time when the flame went dark from 1973 to 1985, the flame has lit up downtown Milwaukee ever since.

So the next time you take a trip to Milwaukee, look up at the flame in the sky.
