Another large and robust winter storm slides through the southern half of the state today.

Expect a lengthy storm that will continue through today before eventually wrapping up Sunday morning.

What You Need To Know

  • Heavy snow is likely for southern Wisconsin

  • Between 3 to 6 inches of snow is possible in the main band

  • Higher amounts are possible near Lake Michigan

Several counties are currently under some form of a winter weather alert through early Sunday morning.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Ozaukee, Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for all of southern Wisconsin outside of the four counties near Lake Michigan.

Timing

Midday: Snow will be light to moderate and will begin to spread from west to east. Road conditions will start to deteriorate.

This evening: Moderate to heavy snow continues to fall. Snowfall rates could top an inch per hour. Extremely poor visibility is likely. This, along with snow-covered roads, will lead to hazardous travel conditions.

Midnight: Additional heavy snow continues to fall over portions of eastern Wisconsin. Snow begins to tapper off further west towards Madison.

Sunday morning: A band of lake-effect snow will likely set up from Port Washington to Kenosha quickly upping the snow totals near the lake.

Snow estimates

A wide swath of 3 to 6 inches of snow will fall across southern WI, extending from Platteville to Milwaukee. Higher amounts are possible in pockets.

In fact, snow totals could reach between 6 to 9 inches in the warned area due to lake enhancement. If a band sets up inland, light and fluffy snow could result in higher accumulations there.

Snow totals will drop off quickly farther north of Fond Du Lac and the Dells area.
