After a very quiet and uneventful storm season, it has unquestionably exploded over the last few weeks.

What You Need To Know

  • The National Weather Service confirms 10 tornadoes since Aug. 7

  • 5 were rated an EF-0, 4 were rated EF-1, 1 was an EF-3

  • There were no injuries and no deaths reported

The National Weather Service has now confirmed that in just a 5-day span, 10 tornadoes hit Wisconsin. This occurred between Aug. 7 and Aug. 11.

Here is a listing of those tornadoes:

As of Aug. 16, our total tornado count for the year is now up to 27. Of the 27 tornadoes, 25 have happened within the last 3 weeks. We saw a similar uptick in tornadoes over a short period of time in 2019 and 2018.

The two most-active days this year were July 29 (13 tornadoes) and Aug. 11 (5 tornadoes).

Breaking it down by month, this is what we’ve seen so far in 2021:

On average, Wisconsin sees 23 tornadoes per year. We are clearly above average. However, in recent years, it has been worse.

There is more of the season left to go and we could still add to the tally. Tornadoes can--and do--happen in September as well as October in our state.
