Warm weather early in April has led to an early start to Mosquito season across Wisconsin.

What You Need To Know

  • Warm weather early in the season means an early start to Mosquito season

  • The largest numbers are being reported in central Wisconsin

  • Any cold snaps could kill off this early Mosquito population

Remember back to early April? We had an incredible stretch of weather across the state, with several weeks of well above average temperatures. While this was great for outdoor enthusiasts, it created the perfect breeding ground for those annoying Mosquitos.

So far this April, the largest number of Mosquitos have been reported in central and northern parts of the state.

Other locations, particularly the southeast areas, have seen lower numbers so far, but this will probably increase as we head into the warmer months.

Believe it or not, Wisconsin has over 60 different Mosquitos, but the ones making an appearance now are an unusual breed. This group is a hardy bunch and many of them survived as adults through the winter and now that things are warming up, they are ready to go!

Unfortunately, this type also seems to be more aggressive, so it would be wise to carry that bug spray with you when heading out!

The good news is that it's still early in the season and any cold snaps between now and the summer will probably kill off much of this early mosquito population.

There are some simple things you can do to help reduce these annoying pests around your home. Try to remove or drain any areas of standing water as this is where mosquitos like to lay their eggs.

You can also buy candles that repel mosquitos and place them around the patio if spending an evening outside. Last, wear bug spray, and that way you'll be protected no matter where you go.
