What does it mean to be a storm spotter?

Well, the SKYWARN Storm Spotter Program was created by the National Weather Service (NWS) in hopes to improve warning services. As a Storm Spotter volunteer, you would work closely with the NWS and local emergency management programs during severe weather events, providing real-time reports of hail size, wind damage, flash flooding, heavy rain, tornadoes, and waterspouts. This helps NWS and local meteorologists verify radar indications with what's happening in your area.

Your "Weather On The 1s" team works closely with five different NWS offices on a daily basis, making sure we're bringing you the most accurate weather updates every 10 minutes on Spectrum News 1.
