After a cloudy start to the weekend Saturday, plenty of sunshine is in the forecast for Sunday with highs in the low to mid 30s across the state. Winds will increase of the southwest to 15-20mph but some gusts up to 30mph will be possible. Clouds will increase overnight ahead of a storm system that will impact Wisconsin on New Year's Eve.
Two separate storm systems will work together to bring wintry precipitation to the state. An area of low pressure to the south will initially bring a brief period of freezing rain or drizzle to southern WI after sunrise Monday. As temperatures warm to above freezing, the freezing rain or drizzle will change over to rain by mid-morning.
A cold front dipping down from the northwest will usher much colder air into the state during the afternoon hours which will cause the rain to change back to a rain/snow mix and then all snow by Monday night. Accumulations will generally be light and will range from a dusting up to 3 inches, depending on your location. Around and south of Milwaukee can expect less than 1 inch with up to 3 inches likely farther north toward Appleton and Green Bay. Around Madison, snow totals look to top out around 1-2 inches with lesser amounts toward La Crosse & Eau Claire.
A lingering snow shower or flurry will be possible for some on New Year's Day with temperatures falling back into the teens and 20s as we start 2019.
