GREEN BAY, Wis. — It will not go down as one of the best games in Packers history. Yet the box score for Sunday’s 20-3 victory over the Rams will look beautiful.
It is true that the Rams are not great and they were without starting quarterback Matthew Stafford. When you’re 2-5 and stuck in a four-game losing streak like the Packers were, that stuff doesn’t mean much. The Packers desperately needed a win and they got it.
Aaron Jones rushed for 73 yards (including a touchdown) and added 26 yards in receiving. It felt like more. Yes, he had a fumble, but having him out there (on more than a limited basis) makes a big difference for the offense. Jordan Love was 20 of 26 for 228 yards and a clinching touchdown on a brilliant play design to Luke Musgrave.
Days after Rasul Douglas was traded, the Packers defense played well. Rookies Carrington Valentine and Anthony Johnson Jr. contributed to the victory. Noteworthy especially because veteran Rudy Ford was out with injury.
Isaiah McDuffie took advantage of Quay Walker being out and was a revelation at linebacker. Instead of sulking and throwing away the season, the Packers were able to get the win.
The Packers are 3-5. None of us should get carried away with what we saw Sunday. You should beat a bad team playing a backup quarterback on your home field. It sure beats the alternative, though.
Sterner tests await, including next Sunday against the 5-3 Steelers in Pittsburgh.
