GREEN BAY, Wis. — If you were able to glean deep conclusions from the Packers’ 28-21 loss to the 49ers in Friday night’s preseason opener, you’re a lot smarter than I am.
Aaron Rodgers was among the big group of Packers who did not play. It’s preseason in the NFL. Look for meaning at your own peril.
Here are the few coherent thoughts I had about the game from a Packers perspective.
I still don’t know if Jordan Love will be a winning starting quarterback in the NFL. He threw two touchdown passes and three interceptions in his first half of play. Packer’s Head Coach Matt LaFleur seemed to exonerate Love from most of the blame on the interceptions.
The Packers offensive line was not a disaster despite the lingering concerns about David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins. Keeping in mind that the 49ers defense was not playing everybody or showing much creativity in the preseason, at least Love was not under siege on every play.
The trade of Davante Adams has made the Packers receiver position the most fascinating to me. Romeo Doubs continued his strong camp with a touchdown. Wisconsin’s Danny Davis went undrafted, but keeps making plays.
And Amari Rodgers shouldn’t be written off despite a quiet rookie season. That doesn’t even include the veterans Lazard, Cobb and Watkins, who didn’t play.
Among the rookies, the Packers will be patient with Christian Watson because of the investment of a second-round pick. And Samori Toure shows flashes too.
So, it’s on to joint practices and a preseason game with the Saints. We’ll learn more. Just don’t expect to have everything cleared up in the next week. It’s preseason in the NFL.
