MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers are sending star reliever Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres.
Hader, who is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2023 season, currently leads all of Major League Baseball with 29 saves.
In return, the Brewers are acquiring the Padres current closer Taylor Rogers, pitchers Robert Gasser and Dinelson Lamet and outfielder Esteury Ruiz in the trade. Rogers has 28 saves with the Padres this season.
President of Baseball Operations, David Stears, released a statement on Twitter Monday saying, "the players we are receiving in this trade help ensure that the future of the Milwaukee Brewers remains bright while not compromising our desire and expectations to win today."
Stearns added that while the decision to let Hader go was not easy, the trade gives the organization "the best chance for sustained competitiveness."
