The Brewers have the reigning National League Rookie of the Year in relief pitcher Devin Williams. An injury cut Williams’ sparkling 2020 season short.

A strained rotator cuff kept Williams out of the Brewers’ playoff series against the Dodgers. It’s something that was difficult for Williams to swallow.

“Having to sit there for those few days and knowing that I wouldn’t be able to contribute in any way, that was pretty tough you know," said Williams. "I felt I did a lot to help us get to that point last year and to not be able to help in the postseason when it really counts…it gives me some more motivation for this year.”

Williams says he’s feeling good now and is still building strength back into the shoulder. He was sensational in 2020 with a 4-1 record and a microscopic 0.33 earned run average.

“Honestly, I’m still kind of in the moment, so you don’t really kind of realize what you are able to do and what you are able to accomplish," added Williams.  "But yeah, I really haven’t had that moment yet. I am just continuing to try to build on it for this year and keep improving as a pitcher.”

Williams had 53 strikeouts in 27 innings and his changeup was nearly unhittable, with an opponents’ batting average of .032 against it. Even as a setup man, Williams was able to win National League Rookie of the Year.

“I didn’t think that I was going to win, to be honest. It was kind of a shock to me," said Williams. "I do believe that I earned it, but I was definitely surprised because they definitely tend to lean towards the hitters, everyday hitters.”

Williams forms a potent combination with Josh Hader at the back end of the Brewers’ bullpen. The Brewers were 24-1 when they led after eight innings last year.
