MILWAUKEE — If Milwaukee Bucks fans were looking for clarity on whether Giannis Antetokounmpo would sign the supermax contract extension and stay in Milwaukee, they'll have to wait a little longer.

In his first comments of training camp to the media on Wednesday, Antetokounmpo insisted that the extension decision does not dominate his thinking. He said he just wants to focus on basketball while his agents deal with the Bucks' front office. He has until Dec. 21 to sign his supermax extension.

“It’s not on my mind. What’s on my mind is playing basketball and improving every day, and that’s what’s going to be always on my mind,” he said. “That’s what I’ve been doing since day one and it’s never going to change. This is not in my hands. This discussion is between my agent, Jon Horst, the Bucks ownership and they’re taking care of that.”

“I know this is really really big for the city of Milwaukee and for the NBA world and the media world,” he continued. “They’re going to handle those discussions. I’m going to handle what I have to do on the court and everything is going to be good.”

Antetokounmpo made it clear his top priority is winning.

“We’ve got to get better. Obviously everybody wants to win a championship. I’m not playing not to win a championship. I’m not playing to be second or third or fifth. I’m playing to be the best. You’ve got to work for it. You’ve got to hurt to get it,” he said. “As a team, we’ve decided we’ve got to get better. Last year, we wasn’t ourselves. What we showed in the bubble wasn’t ourselves. As a unit we’ve got to create good habits. We’ve got to be the toughest, the nastiest, the team that plays together. You’ve got to keep getting better and hopefully we can get there this year.”

He said he likes the roster moves the Bucks have made, but like coach Mike Budenholzer, won't label this a championship or bust season.

“All the guys we got, they can help the team. They can defend. Got Holiday, Bobby Portis, Torrey Craig, Bryn Forbes … all these guys that came to the team,” he said. “These are the guys we have and these are the great basketball players we’re going to play with and I’m happy to move forward with these guys.”

Antetokounmpo is still under contract with the Bucks for this season. If he ultimately does not resign, his future will be a hot topic throughout the NBA for the months to come.
