MILWAUKEE — Marquette University has announced that Mike Broeker will be promoted from within to become the school’s athletic director, replacing the retiring Bill Scholl.

Broeker has been at Marquette for 21 years, the last 18 as deputy director of athletics. He has been loyal to the university while he managed the day-to-day operations of the athletic department.

He is uniquely qualified because he knows Marquette, and he knows the athletic department.

These are not easy days to be an athletic director. NIL and the transfer portal have made an already difficult job even more challenging.

At least Broeker already knows the coaches, the athletes and the lay of the land at Marquette.

Scholl was underrated in his role. He was a quality ambassador for the university. Broeker is the right guy to carry things forward for Marquette.
