RACINE, Wis. — With dangerously cold temperatures here in Wisconsin early this week, a local mechanic shared some advice on ways to keep cars healthy and running smoothly during the arctic air.
Joseph Fallon of Righteous Auto Care in Racine, Wis., said the extreme cold puts a strain on vehicles, especially batteries, coolant systems and tires.
Fallon said his shop has been busy helping drivers address issues caused by the brutal cold.
“We’re replacing a lot of coolant and batteries right now,” Fallon said.
Fallon said there are simple steps Wisconsinites can take to avoid getting stranded in subzero temperatures.
“Get the battery tested to make sure it’s still good, because cold weather really affects its performance,” Fallon said.
Fallon emphasized the importance of making sure coolant is temperature-rated, too.
“Coolant can break down over time, so it’s important to check it regularly,” Fallon said.
Cold air causes tire pressure to drop, so Fallon said it is also important to make sure tires are properly inflated and have adequate tread. He also recommended warming up vehicles before getting on the road.
“Letting your car run 5-10 minutes is perfectly fine,” Fallon advised. “For diesel vehicles, let it warm up for about 15 minutes in a high-idle setting.”
Another tip, according to the experts, is to drive your vehicle at least 30 minutes once a week. Simply starting it without driving won’t allow the battery to recharge properly.
Fallon said these are all simple precautions that can go a long way in keeping your car running smoothly during Wisconsin’s bitter cold.
Madison Veselik said she is thankful for the quick service she received at Righteous Auto Care during the cold snap.
“I called this morning, and they were able to get me in right away. I’m so thankful for that,” Veselik said.
With two young children at home, Veselik said she knows the importance of keeping her car winter ready.
“We’ve got her and another kiddo at home, so getting everything fixed was a big priority,” she said.
