WISCONSIN — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will host a Free Fishing Weekend next weekend, from Jan. 18-19.

What You Need To Know

  • Anglers can fish without a fishing license, trout stamp or salmon stamp during the DNR's Free Fishing Weekend on Jan. 18-19

  • However, the DNR said 2024-2025 Hook and Line regulations still remain in effect

  • Those who don’t have ice fishing gear can borrow some from the DNR at 19 tackle loaner sites around the state

  • The DNR said it’s hosting the free weekend to “share the fun and excitement of winter fishing”

During that time, people of all ages can partake in the sport without a fishing license, trout stamp or salmon stamp.

However, the DNR said 2024-2025 Hook and Line regulations still remain in effect. That includes bag limits, size limits and species restrictions. You can find those regulations, here.

The DNR said it’s hosting the free weekend to “share the fun and excitement of winter fishing.”

Those who don’t have ice fishing gear can borrow some from the DNR at 19 tackle loaner sites around the state. Those locations are marked with an “IF” next to their name. Ice augers are not available. You can locate the loaner sites, here.

Most trout streams will be open during the current catch-and-release season for the free weekend. There are some that are closed to fishing, and the DNR encouraged those with questions to refer to trout regulations or check with a local biologist. The DNR said any trout streams that are open require that anglers use artificial lures and release anything they catch.

If anglers choose to keep any fish, the DNR said anglers should check its Safe Eating Guidelines for any consumption advisories.

Before heading out, the DNR also issued the following winter fishing safety reminders:

  • Remember that no ice is 100% safe; get ice conditions from local bait shops and fishing clubs
  • Pack safety gear, including a rescue throw rope and ice claws
  • Dress for the weather, wearing warm, water-resistant layers, sturdy waterproof boots with spike-style creepers and an extra hat and gloves
