WAUKESHA COUNTY, Wis. — Hamilton School District implemented transportation changes, after a 4K student was hit and killed by a bus on Thursday, Jan. 2.
According to a letter sent to Hamilton School District families from Superintendent Paul Mielke on Jan. 2, the student was at Silver Spring Intermediate School (SSI) and transferring to a shuttle to go to Willow Springs Learning Center. Students in 5th and 6th grades attend SSI while Willow Springs Learning Center is populated by 4K students.
Effective Monday, Jan. 6, the school district said all 4K students will go directly to Willow Springs Learning Center. They will no longer have to transfer buses at SSI, or at any other point during morning routes.
Morning buses will go directly to Willow Springs Learning Center to drop off younger students first. Buses will then drop off students at SSI and various elementary schools.
SSI will also implement new bus traffic patterns. Mielke said the new traffic patterns will “enhance safety protocols.”
The school district said current route assignments, as well as pickup and drop off times, will remain the same.
The school district said it is also investigating other long-term safety and transportation changes it can make.
The school district said Waukesha County Seriff’s Department will be on hand each day this week to help with traffic.
The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office said it’s investigating the bus accident. The bus driver is cooperating.
