SISTER BAY, Wis. — New York City may have the giant ball drop, but nearly 1,000 miles from the hustle and bustle of Times Square, another event is helping to ring in the New Year on the Door Peninsula.

What You Need To Know

  • A giant cherry will be dropped at midnight in Sister Bay on New Year's

  • Up to 4,000 people are expected to watch

  • Fireworks begin at 8 p.m.

  • This year, the event will be livestreamed on the radio station's website

Sister Bay is no stranger to doing things their own way. It is perhaps fitting that in a community known for having goats on the roof and a bowling alley where scores are still tallied by hand, instead of a ball drop, it plans to drop a giant cherry.

Sister Bay will once again host its annual Cherry Drop, where a giant lit cherry is lowered from high above downtown. The event is put on by Ephraim-based radio station FM 106.9 The Lodge.

Radio station Vice President Jaime Forest joined Spectrum News 1’s Ryan Burk to talk about the history of the event, and discuss how it helps to celebrate the New Year in a way that is uniquely Door County.

Fireworks begin at 8 p.m., with a radio station live broadcast beginning at 10:30 p.m. The cherry will drop at midnight. If you cannot attend in person, the event will be livestreamed. For more information, including a link to the livestream, you can visit FM 106.9 The Lodge website.
