WISCONSIN — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said anglers are able to fish for Wisconsin’s inland trout species starting Jan. 4, 2025.

However, there are stipulations.

Anglers can only use artificial lures and fish on designated early season trout streams.

Any trout caught from Jan. 4 to May 2, 2025, will need to be released.

Anglers are encouraged to practice “responsible” catch and release. The DNR said the goal should always be to release any fish caught in a positive manner. This can be achieved by landing the fish fast, keeping the fish in the water as much as you can, keeping handling of the fish to a minimum and treating fish gently. The DNR also said if a fish is hooked deeply to “cut the line and let the fish go.”

The general hook and line seasons starts May 3, 2025. At this time, anglers may keep the trout they catch, as long as they follow the DNR requirements.

Participating in the fishing season requires a 2024-2025 fishing license and an inland trout stamp. Those are good through the end of March. Starting in April, a 2025-2026 fishing license and inland trout stamp are required.

Fishing licenses and inland trout stamps can be purchased online at Go Wild or at a Wisconsin licensed sales location
