GREEN BAY, Wis. — A 5-9 team eliminated from playoff contention.
A dome team playing in Green Bay in December.
A team with an interim head coach and playing without its best quarterback, running back and wide receiver. Starting a rookie QB.
I’m describing the New Orleans Saints Monday night at Lambeau Field. To no one’s surprise, the Packers cruised to a 34-0 victory, clinching an NFC playoff berth in the process.
Running back Josh Jacobs has transformed the Packers’ offense. Yes, Jordan Love is playing better and not throwing interceptions. But it’s Jacobs who has now scored 10 touchdowns since the bye. His streak of six straight games with a rushing touchdown is one off the Packers’ record set by Paul Hornung in his majestic 1960 season.
The Packers are now 11-4 as they head to Minnesota for a showdown with a Vikings team that beat the Packers at Lambeau in late September. Both teams are headed to the playoffs. The Vikings still have hope for a division title.
It was an early Christmas present for Packers fans. Give the Packers credit for not stumbling against the Saints by looking forward to Minnesota. Bring on the Vikings.
