GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers play the San Francisco 49ers Sunday afternoon at 3:25 p.m. at Lambeau Field.
The series dates back to 1950 and the Packers and 49ers have played 10 times in the postseason. That’s the most playoff matchups between any two teams in NFL history.
Here are three things to watch in Sunday’s game.
Familiar foe
For Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, those playoff matchups have not been pleasant.
All three times they’ve met in the postseason in the LaFleur era, the 49ers have won. That means the Packers’ seasons in those years came to an end at the hands of San Francisco. That includes last season.
LaFleur worked with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan in Houston, Washington and Atlanta.
Good omen for the Packers
Regular season meetings at Lambeau Field have been a different story. The Packers have won seven out of the last eight regular season meetings in Green Bay, dating back to 1996.
Since 2019 and including the playoffs, this is the seventh meeting between the Packers and 49ers, the most for the Packers against any team not in their division.
Hey Holland
The 49ers linebackers coach is Johnny Holland, who played for the Packers for seven seasons from 1987 until 1993. He’s in the Packers Hall of Fame. Holland also was an assistant coach for the Packers from 1995-’99. Holland battled blood cancer last season.
Former Packers on the 49ers roster include linebacker De’Vondre Campbell and punter Pat O’Donnell.
Correction: A previous version of this story listed the incorrect number of regular season meetings between the Packers and the 49ers at Green Bay since 1996. This error has been corrected. (Nov. 21, 2024)
