KENOSHA, Wis. — An inmate died at the Kenosha County Jail Pretrial Facility early in the morning on Nov. 3, the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday.

According to the sheriff’s office, on Nov. 3, at 1:40 a.m., a correctional office found a 38-year-old male inmate who was unresponsive in his cell. However, the inmate was still breathing.

Medical staff were brought in to assist immediately, but when they arrived at the scene, the inmate had stopped breathing.

The sheriff’s office said jail staff started CPR and asked for additional assistance from the Kenosha Fire Department, all part of protocol. Life-saving measures were attempted until 2:20 a.m., when the inmate was pronounced dead.

Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office said the inmate was from Illinois and had been in Kenosha County Jail Pretrial Facility since Oct. 12.

Officials said the inmate’s name would not be released at this time, as they work to notify next of kin.

This is an active, ongoing investigation.

“We are committed to a thorough and transparent investigation and will provide further information as it becomes available,” said Kenosha County Sheriff David Zoerner.

Racine County Sheriff’s Office will lead the investigation. As of Monday afternoon, no suspicious activity was suspected, nor was any use of force by correctional staff.
